Before training your cat you will probably have to start with learning it’s behavior. How will you understand how the cat will learn without it?
Cats can jump and land on their feet. This is one of their instincts from birth. When born, their paws padding isn’t fully developed yet, for landing. In about 7 weeks, they are ready and developed for landing better.
Cats bones are also unique, in they have no collar bone. This makes it possible for them to flex unlike many other animal. They can jump far without injury. From this, if you want to train their behavior in the area of jumping over, or through things and on/over things, you will have decent results. Though jumping too high can still injure them.
A cat’s hearing range includes a higher range of frequencies than many other animals, and can hear sounds and their harmonics that the rest are unaware of. It’s how they seem to know whenever you open a can of cat food.
They also have some distinct traits as far as smell. They use it almost like hearing and seeing at times. They will mark where they have been by rubbing up to things. They can also smell well what else has been there. In the dark it can amount to smelling their trail.
One thing many don’t know, they also smell with their higher mouth. There is a gland there called “Jacobson’s organ”. It’s a sac that is filled with blood. As it smells the scent and opens its mouth, the scent flows there and its brain gets a little extra information.
Cats are territorial as well. Understanding these instincts and other capabilities of the cat can bring you many good ideas to help train your cat’s behavior. If you let it do what you want in its own nature, it will perform pretty well eventually. When you are done, the results will show how effective you have been. You might need to learn a little more then try…
When training the cat there are a number of things you will want to think about in the process. Aggression from a cat can mean several things. One being it isn’t feeling well, particularly with ageing cats. It might be wise to have the vet take a look at the cat to get a clearer picture on this. It may also be irritated by other cats, persons, things, or situations within its territory. This might not be the best time to train the cat.
Animals do have some common ground with humans. Specifically, they can suffer from depression and anxiety. If this is the case, it will effect how well your cat can be trained. Dealing with these first can ease the rest, especially if it makes them closer to you, the trainer. Cats can really become stressed out too. There are also treatments for that, again the vet may be your best direction. Just like humans, there are medications that can help. Other signs of a sick cat can be messy hair. When depressed or sick in general they won’t go to the trouble they do when they are healthy.
When a cat does wrong, losing your temper will only push the cat away. Hitting them will simply make them more a loner than they were naturally in the first place. Finding a sound, or specific words that you might make if you catch them immediately misbehaving can be helpful. More so than most animals, they rapidly forget what they did as their usual focus is on what they are up to right now. Try “NO”.
Things like the cat getting on the counter, or after other food may be hard to counteract in a cat, since they are survivors, and pretty much set in their ways if you can’t deter the act early on. You may have to resort to putting lids on everything if nothing else works.
The best time to start training your cat (or any animal) is from day one as a kitten. They are still forming their opinion on their world, and you will be able to have a lot more influence on it. At the same time, most cats have very distinct personalities, so you will also find that getting to know them earlier will give you advantages in training them.
A good cat is the result of a good home, where the cat is a part of it. If you start early, and put the time in, you will get great results.
