Aides to Help Train Your Cat
There are so many items on the market to help train your cat, you could spend a lifetime and still not try them all. Some are cheap, while others carry hefty price tags; everything from Cat Houses, to sprays that keep them off furniture, and even leashes. And even books about how to use them all.

This is a good time to look over some of these training items, and see what might be useful to you.

The first thing you may want to consider is the lightweight leash, chain and a collar. It’s a great idea for the cat that isn’t allowed to run freely on their own. When outside, they have a little room to run around, and at the same time, won’t get away and disappear for weeks at a time (as cats will). Beyond this though, it’s a good idea to walk these cats on a leash as well. Cats like exercise too, as well as walking, and it’s a good way to get more familiar with your cat (and them you as well). This way you’ll have more ground on other fronts when training them.

One tool that is definitely worth mentioning is the scat mat. It enables you to train your cat to stay away from certain areas. They use pulses of electricity to encourage the cat to be elsewhere without hurting them. They come in various sizes, shapes, and colors to fit wherever you want them to. They use minimal power via batteries. Look for them at your local pet retailer as they may prove useful. I hear they have dummy ones too that can be useful after the cat has learned to avoid them knowing what to expect.

Catnip is a great tool also as it can be used to encourage the right behaviors in your cat, and withheld when they are miss-behaving. It contains transneptalactone which is a plant substance that resembles female cat urine. It will be more effective on male cats.

It is available in many items, as well as in an oregano-looking-like form. Along with many cat toys, that will attract cats to play with them. It also comes in sprays for covering areas you want to encourage the cat to prowl (or other items). On their bed and in the kitty litter are 2 places where using catnip spray might be useful. You can also get it in balls for the cat to roll around the house. These are cat safe products that have been in use for years. You can also grow your own catnip.

You can also get your cat a play mouse. However they still prefer the real thing and will hunt them even in the house. Short of that though, they will also play with fake ones that are cat toys meant to be played with. Often these will have catnip scent on them too. Giving them things that represent what they naturally like already tends to bring you more favorable results when training your cat. They do like to play, and being happy will lead to a longer, and cleaner life for them.

Rewards that are healthy for your cat are a great tool too. Cats generally know what’s good for them, and when they get plenty of them, they will be happier and much more responsive to you as well. Vitamins and minerals are available just like for humans. With the right balance your cat will be happy, healthy, and wise. There are a number of pre-mixed ones at the pet store to choose from, though it would be wise to consult a vet for the best ideas of what to choose. You may also find you can cook up some great treats as well. There will be books on this likely found at the pet store.

As long as you are patient with your cat when they are learning, you will be learning a lot too.
